Throughout this week, the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make marmalade. They began the week with a visit to Waitrose, where we browsed the aisles to find the oranges, sugar, and also inspected jars of already made marmalade so the children knew what they were going to make.
On Thursday, we began making the marmalade. The children assisted in cutting, peeling, and juicing the oranges and a lemon into our cooking pot. They used some child safety knives, improving their fine motor skills, and enjoyed the exciting activity as they learned how to assess and manage their own risks whilst cooking.
After adding sugar and heating it up on the hot plate, we observed how everything cooked and melted together. The following day, the marmalade was ready, and the children helped to spoon it into the jars and served it with their morning snack.
