Science Day (1)

 Science Day

Science day was full of potions and experiments in the toddler room. We explored texture and mixing through our potion making in a tuft tray. We then conducted an experiment with milk, food colouring and washing up liquid. We add the colouring to the milk then dip a cotton bud into the washing up liquid. The cotton bud is then added to the milk and we watched all of the colours disappear! We loved exploring different colours and testing our ideas to see if any other changes occurred.

In baby room we celebrated science day by making raincloud in cups. They used water, shaving foam and food colouring. The babies then carried out the exciting experiment and used their fine motor skills to squeeze the pipettes that had the different food colouring, into the cup and then the babies watched the colours seep through the shaving foam as it was making some amazing spirals and shapes.

In preschool for science day we learnt all about growth and development. We explored the biology of a plant and spoke about what the different parts of the plant do for the plants development and how it fits in with the circle of life. We used dill seeds and seeds from a bean and spoke about how different environments would affect how much they would grow and which ones they thought would grow faster. The children decided they thought the dill seeds would take the quickest to grow as it wouldn’t grow as tall.

On a separate activity we explored light and how it transmitted through the objects. We used shapes and our fine motor skills to slot in the corresponding shapes to the correct holes and asked open ended questions about how we thought the light will travel through. Some children said it “must be magic” whilst other said that it was “so bright and travelled through”. We explained that light travels in rays and when passing through a transparent object it bends and reflects making its way through the obstruction object.
