Preschool - Our Olympic swim
Our topic in preschool was about the current 2024 Olympics, so it’s been a very sporty and practical week with some of the children already coming in nursery mentioning “divers” and “swimmers”, relating to what they watched at home. We started off with videos and recap competitions of the Olympics so all the children can see what competing against each other looks like, teamwork, unfamiliar sports and some they can even relate to from outside of nursery. They were very engaged witnessing the swimmers like Adam Peaty in the pool and afterwards watching gymnasts like Simone Bailes performing, with one child funnily commenting “she is the goat” and another child relating to it saying, “I go to gymnastic classes”. The children were eager to have the paddling pool out, especially with the warm weather, so it was a perfect time for them to have their own competition which was ‘boat races’, connecting to the canoeing clips they watched of the athletes. They strongly enjoyed taking part in the boat races with lots of cheer, focus and splashing around with each other. Lastly, with the preschool’s love of colours we thought of a great idea for them to paint their own famous Olympic rings. The children were shown the 5 colored rings, blue, black, red, yellow and green, then used their watercolours and brushes to then create their own whilst eyeballing it. As an extension the children enjoyed making their own Olympic torch and took turns carrying it around the garden representing the trophy. They loved this topic so much and indulged in all the fun activities keeping them busy!
