Preschool Job Fair
This week in preschool, we focused on different occupations. The children were asked to first name different occupations, to which they replied, “police”, “doctor” and “teacher” amongst others. We then played a little game of “who am I?” where they had to match the description of the jobs to the correct occupation. The children successfully matched them all and even learned some new jobs such as a waiter or waitress. During the activity, one of the children said “my daddy is a barber, he cuts hair!” which prompted the other children to name their parents occupations. Some children said “my mummy is a doctor” and “my mummy is an artist”.
The children then got to have a turn at trialing different jobs. We chose three jobs that the children were most interested in which was, police officer, car mechanic and chef. The children were spilt into three different groups to trial each job and then rotated. At the police station the children had to solve the mystery of the missing tart and cake. The children were given some clues, such as which cake or tart was missing and some paw prints. The children identified the flavour/colour of what was missing and who the footprint belonged to. The children then went on a mission to find them and saw some footprints leading to a dinosaur and horse! The children had lots of fun being police officers. At the car garage, the children had to slide under the “car” and try to screw on the nuts onto the bolt. The children concentrated very hard and used their fine and gross motor skills to fix the cars. Finally at the restaurant, the children had to prepare some yummy fruit salad for pudding. The children first talked about the importance of washing hands and the fruit. The children said “we need to wash the germs away” and “we need to use soap”. Preschool then used their fine motor skills to chop up all the fruit. After each job, the children earned some “money” which they then used to buy some stickers from the shop. The children used their mathematical skills to count how much “money” they had and how many stickers they could get.
To further extend on this topic, the children then filled out a worksheet, about what they wanted to be when they grow up. One child said they wanted to be a pilot because “there’s food on the plane” and “so I can fly to Ireland”. The children drew themselves as their future occupations and wrote at the bottom what it is.
