Our Five Senses

This week in preschool the children’s focus was on our 5 different senses and how we use them. We began implementing this topic by speaking to the children about what 5 different parts of our bodies link to our senses and why it’s important to use them during our daily lives. On the list were the words, see’, smell’, touch’, taste’ and ‘hear’ along with the images of eyes, noses, hands, mouths, and ears paired with the senses to make it more convenient for the children who are unable to read yet, but have the images to help support them.

For the practical activity, we had a variety of images and objects printed out along with 5 different tables labelled with a different sense each so they can differ from one another. After going through a demonstration with the children, they were all given the task as a group to divide all the pictures into their category depending on the sense. For example, there were a lot of foods and desserts which they placed on the ‘taste’ or ‘smell’ table, radios, and instruments onto the ‘hear’ table, light bulbs and fires on the ‘see’ table, and images of furry materials and teddy bears, placed onto the ‘touch’ table.

They have done excellent work with this activity, were so engaged in cooperating together, portraying a lot of curiosity about their bodies and how it works! Well done, Preschool!
