This week preschool focused on the human body and looked into their limbs and features. We began with circle group discussions on; how many of each limb do we have, and what we do with them? How many features do we have on our face, and what they’re used for? The children were able to relate to each other; comparing eye colours, arm and leg lengths, hair colours and so forth.
For the first activity, we suggested to have the outline of a child size body drawn on a big paper for the children to then add the details to. Elba kindly volunteered, so just before we drew around her we used the meter stick to measure her length which resulted to over 100cm, so the children were able to think numbers and have an idea of what’s it like to measure a small human.
Afterwards, once the outlining was complete all the children grabbed a pencil/felt tip and took turns on filling up the body with features and details. The children were thrilled to see the drawing slowly come together with many colours; adding red shoes, purple nail polish, a green belly button and more.
Next, we came up with a fun and creative extension activity where the children took part in their very own TWISTER floor game. Some children volunteered to help begin the activity making process by drawing around their own hands and feet, cutting them out and colouring them in. After sticking them down on the sheet, we took turns in playing the task, which the teacher would ask them for example, “ place your right hand on the pink handprint, and your left foot on the green footprint.” And so on till they managed to reach to the top of the sheet.
This brought the children so much joy and laughter when physically putting their own bodies in the different positioning and following the instructions. They portrayed a lot of support to one another, pointing out the different colour hand and footprints to help the opponent complete the task faster with success. Great work Preschool !
