National Poetry Day (1)

On Thursday, we celebrated world poetry day in preschool! The children made their own acrostic poem using the word “HAPPY”. The children took it in turns to come up with different words and sentences for each of the letter. The first child said, “H is for horses!” and wrote the first part of our poem! With the help of an adult the children were able to come up with “Horses Are having a Purple Party Yay!” They each took it in turns to write parts of the poem and were so excited when they completed the poem! To further extend our celebration for poetry day, the children talked about rhyming words. One child said “rhyming words sound the same”. Preschool then built a nursery rhyme wall using one of their favourite nursery rhymes “Humpty Dumpty”. The words of the “Humpty Dumpty” were all jumbled up and written on bricks. The children then took it in turns to put the nursery rhyme back together and build their wall! Well done preschool, you did very well!

The babies celebrated world poetry day by exploring different rhyming key words using flashcards such as clock and sock, car and star, cow and owl and apple and pineapple. The babies had to find the different pictures hidden in the coloured rice.

To celebrate World Poetry day the toddlers looked at the Dr Seuss book "One Fish, Two Fish" We really enjoyed the repetition and rhyming within this book and it helped us learn and repeat new words and try to follow the pattern. We then explored our own sea life tuft tray where we hunted for the number 1 and 2 that were hidden under the fish to help promote number recognition while also connecting to the poem.
