Match the objects
This week in preschool the children’s topic was literacy, and engaged in some group activities and focused ones that they could all cooperate in together. To begin with, in our own circle time groups we made sounds bags that was filled with different resources to assist with the children’s practice and involvement i.e., alphabet flash cards, letter stencils, a mix of objects that does and doesn’t start with that specific letter and more. As a group their task was to take turns in pulling out something from the bag, identifying what it is, and attempting the phonic sound with everyone else. For example, in one group the letter was “o” and the children had to point out the specific objects that began with “o”, like orange, oval, the colour orange etc. They were so good at watching and waiting to see what things were brought out of the bag, and how it related to that letter.
We extended this activity with an exciting race between 2 groups, where they both had their own big trays that filled with flash cards from a-z all around the edges of them, circling around a variety of random objects that all represent the alphabet. We took turns starting from A when we pronounced the phonic sound “a” and had to search for the apple in the mix. Sometimes to make it easier for them, a question would be asked like, “what fruit begins with the sound ‘w’?” which resulted in watermelon and them finding it a placing it on the letter it goes with. The children were so intrigued by this activity and found it so thrilling to be able to scam through all the random objects in front of them, altogether as a team. Displaying amazing cooperation and teamwork!
