Life cycle of a butterfly

This week in baby room, to celebrate the arrival of our baby caterpillars we explored the life cycle of a butterfly.  We used some dried cereal which is a keen favourite of the babies to imitate the habitat of a caterpillar and introduced a new sensory experience (cloud dough) which enabled the children to explore a new texture and scent within their play. We used pasta shells to imitate the cocoon and our caterpillars and butterflies to finish the experience. We used the items in sequence so that we could fully explore the lifecycle and the process in which a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.  We also observed our growing caterpillars and will continue to observe these over the coming weeks and watch them transform into beautiful butterflies.
