Heuristic Play
This week in the toddler room we have been learning and adapting our skills through heuristic play. Heuristic play is an enriching type of play where babies and young children interact with everyday objects, rather than toys. The goal of heuristic play is to provide a wide range of sensory stimulation to help children discover and learn things for themselves. To do this we first focused on some sensory baskets where we could explore lots of different textures and natural objects like brushes, wooden spoons, baskets and pegs. These enabled us to explore and test our ideas while also exploring texture. We were able to practice stacking sorting and brushing helping us work on our fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. To extend this we found some bottles and boxes and lots of materials that we then used to thread through holes. We used straws and spaghetti to thread through bottles we had to really focus and work hard on our hand eye coordination to help the spaghetti come out through the other side. We were able to test the differences of threading the materials and see which worked best. We then enjoyed creating patterns and exploring our fine motor skills. Well done toddlers was really lovely to see you all exploring everyday natural objects.
