Fine Motor Skills

This week in the toddler room we explored our fine motor skills. Using our fine motor skills involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue and eyes. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing, manipulating objects and getting dressed. To do this we set out a variety of activities that encourage children to use their fine motor skills. Our first activity was recuing animals that had been stuck to the table. We had to use our fine motor skills to peel the tape and rescue the animals. We then continued this through threading cereal through spaghetti. This was a great activity to work on our hand eye coordination as well as our fine motor skills as we had to focus and be careful as we tried to thread the cereal. Our final activity was linked to heuristic play. We placed rings on mug trees, posted discs into boxes and filled wooden cups and barrels with oats and poured them into another cup. We all were very focused and worked very hard on our fine motor skills all week. Well done toddlers!
