Exploring risky play

Exploring risky play

This week in the toddler room we have been exploring risky play, We got plastic pins and hammers to make wholes in different materials we compared the difficulty of the fruits finding the oranges were harder because of its tough skin, the children used words like “its hard” and “juicy” when discovering that making holes in the oranges would make juice squirt out. Some children found it easier using their hands rather than the hammers but persevered with the activity. The children made great use of their motor skills and hand eye co-ordination for this activity showing great care and focus.

We then moved the risky play into the garden where we explored the larger items like the tires and crates to make obstacle courses and slides, we had to be very careful as we explored these, but the children had so much fun showing signs of excitement when going down the makeshift slide saying “weee”. The tires were also used to spin and roll being careful of our friends who were around us.

The toddlers showed great excitement with the outside risky play activities learning to assess their own boundaries and what they felt comfortable with, changing the height of the slide or getting off if they were unsure. Overall it was an amazing experience and was lovely to see the children be riskier with their play showcasing some amazing physical abilities.
