Exploring Materials
This week in preschool, we learned all about different materials. The children first watched a video all about materials and what items are made of each material. The children looked around the room and had a guess at what was made of these materials. The children were surprised to learn that paper is made from wood and that chalk was made from rocks! Following the video one child said, “can we make our own chalk?” which prompted us to research how to make our own. The children used corn flour, water, and some food colouring to make taste safe chalk. The children had lots of fun making the chalk and waited patiently for them to dry. The children demoulded the crayons themselves and were excited to start using them. They were amazed to see that they were magic chalk! When drawing with the crayons, it appeared clear but as they waited a few seconds the colour started to appear! As the chalk started to melt the children used paintbrushes and turned them into chalk paint! The children loved the activity and were very proud of their chalk!
Following on from learning all about different materials, the children learned all about recycling. They learned that we should separate our rubbish into different materials. The children were split into different groups, paper, metal, wood, and plastic. They dressed up in hi vis and got to work collecting materials for their group. The children did extremely well and were able to separate all the items! Well done preschool!
