Exploring Ice
This week for our blog, to explore the changing weather conditions, we began by carrying out our own science experiment and figuring out if we could change water into ice by leaving it in the garden overnight. During our experiment we discussed the changes of matter, i.e. liquid (water) to ice (solid) and how we can achieve this. We spoke about how the temperature outside in the garden was very cold, therefore it might freeze our water into ice, however some children said ‘No, it needs to go in the freezer. Freezers make ice!’
We decided to put these theories to the test, putting play people in the cupcake cases, and using our fine motor skills we poured water to fill them up and left these ones in the garden overnight. We then did the same for our next experiment and put these ones in the freezer.
When we came into preschool the next day, we discovered that the play people in the garden overnight had not frozen. The children were eager to see the freezer ones next, and discovered that they had frozen. We spoke about why we think the garden ones didn’t work, with some children saying ‘it wasn’t cold enough’ and ‘because there was happy land in it.’
With the happy land frozen in ice from the freezer experiment, we created an ice rink and allowed the children to explore the cold temperatures of the ice, role playing ice skating and talking about what it feels like!
Well done Preschool for all of your learning and critical thinking this week.
