Exploring autumn vegetables

Exploring autumn vegetables

In the baby room this week we looked at some of the different types of vegetables we can find in the autumn months.   First the babies became mini gardeners, and we created a mini allotment using a taste safe soil equivalent (coloured oats) and gave the babies the experience of searching for and digging up their own potatoes, carrots and swede using spades. We then explored these in the home corner and the babies could pretend to cook them using the saucepan and the mini kitchen. To extend the vegetable exploration we cooked the vegetables to allow the babies to explore them in a softer state. They were given some mashers, herbs and pestle and mortars and were encouraged to explore by crushing, mashing and squashing the different resources.
