Cherry Blossom
This week preschool engaged in a floral and cool activity, where they froze some water and petals in the shape of hearts to make some appealing and creative ice. At first, we discussed the spring season causing a lot of flowers to bloom and come out, so we agreed to collect some flowers that the children noticed were flourishing so lovely around the nursery. Group by group the children went along with a teacher to pick some petals and explained how we would use them in our activity. Our next step was to pour water into the heart shape molds, in which the children took turns doing very well and sprinkled some petals into each one. We then explained how the freezer would freeze the water overnight because of its very cold temperature being so low, and by the morning it would’ve turned into ice.
Extending on this activity, the children produced their own replica of a cherry blossom plant, gathering the materials needed. To begin they learnt that other than pink blossoms, there was also white blossoms that informed them that many colors can be produced in flowers. The children searched the garden and grabbed some tree branches and sticks, they collected some pink and white tissue paper from the mark making area and picked out some pipe cleaners too. As a cooperative team, the children scrunched bits of tissue papers together on top of the branch stick, then wrapped the pipe cleaners around to keep it secure and together. The children repetitively done this until they formed their beautiful complete cherry blossom. This activity encouraged the children to exercise their physical development and work their fine motor skills, pinching, grabbing and twisting the materials in their creating. This also gave them a more depth insight into spring and their blossoming periods, relating it to what they see outside of the nursery and part of understanding the world.
