Buzzing for bees
This week in preschool we looked at our new topic of life cycles. The preschooler's looked at the life cycle of a bumble bee. The children researched using the touch and tilt the different stages of the life cycle of a bumble bee. The children learnt key steps of how a bee transforms into the different stages. The children first learned that it starts of by laying eggs, once the eggs lay it becomes into a larva, then the larva turns into a pupa and once the pupa has come out it then turns into a bee. We grouped up around the tables with many materials like bubble wrap and nets, to then paint over them and stamp on their papers to create that silhouette effect of a beehive shape, giving the children more of an insight and to be more hands on with the different shapes involved with bees and their habits.
The children also explored that bees collect nectar from plants and that they produce honey from collecting the nectar. The preschool enjoyed their bumblebee tuff tray exploring and identifying the different stages of the bumblebee. The children enjoyed listening to the story about bees and wasp and learning the different body parts of the bees. The children then enjoyed tasting some honey on their morning snack. The children used words such as ‘sweet and sticky’ when tasting the honey. We then extended this activity by the children creating their own honey comb. The children used their fine motor skills to stick down the honeycomb pieces onto the paper and then used yellow crayons to colour in their honeycomb. Lastly the children got the experience to see real life bumble bee. The children were very fascinated about watching the bumblebee and enjoyed observing the bumble bee in the jar. We then let the bumble bee free in the garden
Well done preschool on learning about the life cycle of a bumblebee.
