In baby room we tried to bring back the summer by visiting our own edible seaside. We used coloured oats to create the sea and some blended dried cereal to create taste safe sand. We used play people and mini buckets and spades and sand moulds to make sandcastles with the pretend sand. The babies enjoyed the sensory experience of being able to taste the materials they were playing with, and they also liked the sound of the seashells when we put them to their ears. The babies were encouraged to use their fine motor skills to scoop the sand with the mini spades and to pinch it with their fingers.
