Animals Down Under!
This week preschool looked into all things Australia and the animals that reside there. We started out by making a mind map about things we already knew about Australia, some children stated ‘It takes very long on the aeroplane” and “There are jumping Kangaroo’s there!” Preschool continued to state the things they already knew, and then using the touch and tilt, we decided to extend on our knowledge to see what else we could add to our mind map.
We found out that baby Kangaroos are called Joeys, and baby Koala’s are also called Joeys too! There were some animals we had never heard of called a Duck Billed Platypus, which has a beak and webbed feet just like a duck! Whilst we were using the touch and tilt we looked at a short clip of Australia zoo, where they walked around the zoo and showed us in more depth the work they do to help save these animals and also care for them.
To extend on our activities we decided to have a go at making one of our favourite animals that we looked at which was the Koala bear. We used some newspaper and PVA glue to stick onto the paper plates for the Koala’s fur and we then cut out some paper to use for googly eyes and a finally a nose! Our Koala’s looked so cute!
Finally to further our Australian knowledge we decided to create an Australian terrain full of jungle animals and a crocodile swamp to allow the children to role play and create their own ideas and re-imagine how these animals behave in their natural habitats. Well done preschool for your thorough involvement once again!
